Sarah and Aidan have used a cow monitoring technology to help guide decisions around cow health as well as mating for multiple seasons now. CowManager, the ear sensor system, monitors all of the milking herd’s general health and heat detection through an ear tag. It monitors heat detection for mating, as well as alerting them if there are any temperature changes in the cow, which can be an early warning sign if the cow is unwell.

This allows Aidan and Sarah to farm proactively, rather than reactively. Alerts just pop up on their phones and computers, so they’re always up to speed on how the herd’s doing.

Saving Time and Money

Not only is the system helpful for keeping the herd healthy, it also helps to give farmers a bit more time to switch off. The Stevensons AI their herd themselves, and CowManager gives them peace of mind in doing so. CowManager tells them which cows are on heat for that day, so they can then draft them and inseminate them. The system saves them a lot of money on animal health costs and the costs they used to have for heat detection patches that weren’t proving as efficient.

The result is also a big saving of their time, while cutting back on staff. Because of the accurate cow data and alerts CowManager provides, they no longer require three people in the shed during milking over mating periods. Sarah: “It can act like half a staff member because it can tell you when a cow’s sick before she gets sick by giving you temperature alerts. Without CowManager, we would need more staff.”
